Apr 26, 2018 at 9:39AM Stock screeners help investors find ideas on stocks to buy that can become the next big performers in their investment portfolios. There are plenty of stock screeners you can use, but many of them are hidden behind paywalls or available only to those who have brokerage or other financial relationships with the companies that provide them. There are still a few stock screeners that are free, but some lack enough quality to count on the results they provide. The best free stock screeners combine ease of use, depth of analysis, and breadth of coverage to give investors everything they want. Here are the three best free stock screeners.
Image source: Getty Images. 1: Finviz Stock Screener is my personal choice when it comes to free stock screeners, and it has stayed largely unchanged over the years, making it simple to keep using without having to make changes to favorite screens. You can screen using a wide variety of fundamental, technical, and descriptive metrics. The screener will also provide charts, quotes, and other useful information once you've drilled down and come up with results that are worth further exploration. Image source: Finviz. Finviz's screener has some downsides.
You're constrained to use drop-down menus with prespecified metrics or ranges rather than being able to choose whatever values you want to screen for. More importantly, Finviz doesn't allow you to export results without signing up for its Elite service. But many investors simply want to be able to have a starting point before going to other sources to get more information about the stocks that make the grade.
Finviz is especially useful for those who want to take technical analysis into account in making stock-picking decisions. 2: Zacks Stock Screener is well-known for its rating system, and its free screener offers a surprising amount of functionality, with more metrics than Finviz offers. One of its best features is that you're able to specify the exact figure that you want to use for screening, rather than accepting predetermined values that the screener provides. You can screen stocks using any of dozens of fundamental business and investing metrics, and there's a surprising breadth of coverage that includes earnings surprises, valuation-based measures, dividends, and analyst views on stocks. The ability to save screens and export results to a spreadsheet is especially valuable.
Image source: Motley Fool CAPS. The number of metrics available on the Motley Fool CAPS stock screener is smaller than what you'll find with Zacks or Finviz.
But the sentiment readings that the CAPS star ratings provide can be invaluable in helping you figure out whether other investors have tapped into the same things you're looking at, or whether you've truly uncovered a little-known diamond in the rough. Get the information you need Stock screeners are useful, and you don't have to pay for solid screening tools. Free stock screeners from Finviz, Zacks, and The Motley Fool can help you find the stocks you want to invest in easily and efficiently.

Get your copy of StockSpy today. You won't regret it! FatBubba, Simple but very detailed. I’ve really enjoyed Stock Spy. I like that it is a very detailed App why many different functions and features and I don’t have to use any of them if I don’t want to. But it’s great to know they are there.
I wanted an app that allowed me to track my trade and then give me a real-time gain or lose breakdown. I’ve also really enjoyed the articles I’m able to access through the window. It’s just so nice that I can stay on one screen and not have to open up a truckload of browser windows.
I’ve not purchased the additional service since I’m not a day trader or have any need for the additional features. If you want to track your stocks and see you real-time gain and loss, this is the app for you. I like all the options and there are many great ones, but it’s is simplicy and seamless interface that sold me. FatBubba, Simple but very detailed. I’ve really enjoyed Stock Spy. I like all the options and there are many great ones, but it’s is simplicy and seamless interface that sold me. Hsvl-Bob, I LOVE this app!!! I have been investing in the stock market for over 50 years and using charting methods for almost as long. I've used them all - Trendline, Mansfield, Daily Graphs - and - I used to make my own charts (back in the pre-computer days)! For some years, I have been using Worden Bros, which is a good package - but, in many ways, not as good as this. I came on this while researching what else was out there. I downloaded and started using it on a limited basis.
Like many apps, which get tried and discarded, some don't last long on my machine. But this one did. I began using it as a second look, back-up of sorts, to Worden.
But, I found myself using it more and more. It didn't take long until I added my long list of ticker symbols and using this everyday, and during the trading day. (Investing, once a necessity, has become more of a steady hobby.) Now, Worden has become my back-up, and sometimes not looked at for days. I like the charts. I like the data. I like the news feeds.
I like essentially everything about this app. I go many places on the internet during the trading day for info, but this has almost become my one stop app. Highly recommended! J.Carter17, Wish i could buy pro.? I have found this program really useful on my mac, It is not as great as an app for iphone but thats fine i can still get enough of the information on my phone, i am confused though because the one part of the app that you would think they would make sure worked perfectly is the “Buy Pro” button and yet I can click on it all day long to no avail. So even if i did want to upgrade to pro which i think i do as long as it is only an account upgrade and i dont have to pay twice for my phone and my computer I cannot. The reason for upgrading is that you can only record so many trades in the program without having pro and i have reached my limit of trades and i also would enjoy it being seamless on all my devices as well.
